Why cleaning matters
Keeping your filter maintained restores airflow, protects sensors, and helps it last for the life of the vehicle. Unlike disposable paper filters, these performance elements are washable and reusable—great for both car applications and motorcycles.
How often should you service it?
As a general guideline, clean the filter every 12–15k miles (20–25k km). If you ride or drive in dusty conditions, shorten that interval. For a deeper look at how the media works, see our Filtration Technology guide.
What you’ll need
- Official BMC Washing Kit (detergent + oil, bottle or spray)
- Clean pan or tub for soaking and rinsing
- Lint-free cloths or paper towels
- Good lighting to inspect the media
- Gloves (optional)
Tip: Use the official kit. Harsh chemicals or non-approved oils can damage the filter and reduce performance.
Step-by-step cleaning & re-oiling
1) Remove & prep
- Ensure the engine is cool and the ignition is off.
- Remove the filter from the airbox; gently tap the frame to knock off large debris.
- Wipe out the airbox so you’re not reinstalling into dirt.
2) Apply detergent & soak
- Place the filter over a tray and pour the BMC detergent across the pleats.
- Allow the solution to soak for 20–30 minutes.
3) Rinse gently
- Rinse both sides with low pressure water until contaminants are flushed out.
- Use a light behind the media to check for even cleanliness; repeat if needed.
4) Air-dry fully
- Let the filter air-dry away from direct sunlight and heat.
- Do not use compressed air or dryers; the media must be completely dry before oiling.
5) Re-oil (choose one method)
Bottle method: Run a thin bead along each pleat on one side only. Let the oil wick until the media shows an even red tint through to the opposite side. Dab away excess from the frame/mesh.
Spray method: Apply a light, even coat to both sides. Check for uniform coverage—no pooling.
Goal: Even coloration without drips. Too much oil can weep and affect sensors; too little lowers filtration efficiency.
6) Reinstall & inspect
- Refit the filter into the clean airbox with a proper seal.
- After a short drive, confirm smooth idle and no visible oil in the airbox.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Over-oiling: If you see wet spots, blot excess and allow more wicking time before reinstalling.
- Rushing dry time: Moisture restricts flow—wait until fully dry.
- High-pressure washing or harsh chemicals: Stick with the official cleaning kit.
FAQs
Can I use other cleaners or oils?
No — only the official BMC Washing Kit is recommended.
Does this apply to CDA filters?
Yes, the filter element in the BMC CDA Intake uses the same maintenance process.
How do I know I used enough oil?
The cotton should be evenly red, not dripping. Too much = wipe away excess. Too little = reapply lightly.
Final checklist
- Remove filter & clean airbox
- Apply detergent, soak 20–30 minutes
- Rinse gently, repeat if needed
- Air-dry fully
- Re-oil evenly (bottle or spray method)
- Reinstall & check performance
